Skin Needling

Skin needling, also known as microneedling, is a cosmetic procedure that involves using fine needles to create thousands of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the top layer of skin. This controlled injury prompts the skin to heal naturally, boosting collagen and elastin production, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more even-toned skin.

What does Skin Needling Involve?

Skin needling involves a device with fine needles that glide over the skin, creating micro-punctures. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound healing processes, increasing collagen and elastin production. The procedure typically includes cleansing the skin, applying a numbing cream, followed by the needling process, and concluding with a calming serum or mask.

FAQs

What is skin needling, and how does it work?

Skin needling, also known as microneedling, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process, promoting collagen and elastin production, which helps improve skin texture, reduce scars, and minimise wrinkles.

What skin concerns can skin needling treat?

Skin needling is effective for treating a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, enlarged pores, and overall skin texture and tone. It can be used on the face, neck, and other areas of the body.

How is skin needling performed?

At Grand Cosmetic Clinic, we begin your skin needling treatment by applying a topical anaesthetic cream to your face for 15-20 minutes to help minimise any discomfort. Fine needles from the Dermapen are then used to gently puncture the skin, stimulating the production of new collagen for smoother, firmer skin. The procedure typically takes about an hour, and it can be performed on any area of the body.

After the treatment, you may notice a flushed, pink appearance similar to mild sunburn, which usually lasts for up to 48 hours. Dry skin and light scabs may form within the next day and can take up to two weeks to naturally fall off. It’s important not to pick at these scabs. For the best healing, avoid using stimulating products like AHAs, retinol, or any acidic treatments for at least two days after your procedure. Some patients may experience mild breakouts around the mouth and chin, but this is temporary. We’re here to guide you through your recovery process to ensure optimal results.

How long does a skin needling session take, and is there any downtime?

A skin needling session usually lasts 30–60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. After the treatment, you may experience redness and mild swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, which typically subsides within a few hours to a day. Most people can resume normal activities within 24 hours.

When will I see results, and how long do they last?

Results from skin needling start to appear within a few weeks as collagen production increases, with optimal results seen after 2–3 months. The effects are long-lasting, though periodic treatments may be recommended to maintain results.

Is skin needling safe, and are there any side effects?

Yes, skin needling is safe when performed by a trained professional. Side effects are generally minimal and can include temporary redness, swelling, or mild irritation at the treatment site. These effects typically resolve within a day or two. Your practitioner will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure the best healing process.
